Sponsored by the Department for Education, the Autism Education Trust (AET) help ensure that autistic children and young people receive an education that enables them to fulfil their aspirations and engage in society as active citizens. On their website they have a chargeable training offer for Early Years, Schools and Post 16 delivers through training hubs.  However the website also contains free downloadable resources

Statement from Achieving for Children on PDA:

AfC follow the guidelines in the DSM-V or ICD-10 manuals of diagnostic criteria currently used in the UK. These guidelines do not recognise PDA as a condition and therefore diagnostic services such as CAMHS would not make a separate diagnosis of PDA and do not fund independent assessments. However we recognise that some parents and carers may have an interest in understanding more about this subject. We have therefore included information on PDA on this website to meet this need but for reference only.​

Colour Blind Awareness

Colour Blind Awareness is a Community Interest Company, formed for non-profit making purposes, to raise awareness of the needs of the colour blind in the community. All profits from the company will be used to provide free colour vision testing in schools and provide educational supplies suitable for colour blind students.

 
Bullying

The Diana Award's Anti-Bullying Campaign involves a number of different projects aimed at reducing bullying in schools. The website contains useful advice for schools, parents and young people. It also contains links to other anti bullying resources including some specific for children and young people with special educational needs or disability.

The Antibullying Alliance website also contains resources and training for school, both general and relating to disability on a range of subjects including cyberbullying.

 
Complex learning difficulties and disabilities (CLDD)

The Department for Education identified through feedback from schools that educators needed a new teaching and learning framework to meet the needs of children and young people with Complex Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (CLDD). SSAT was commissioned to develop resources to support schools in educating these children. These briefing packs provide initial information about conditions which often overlap with others to form the complex make up of children with complex learning difficulties and disabilities (CLDD). There are ten packs on different topics/conditions that can be downloaded , each of which includes:

  • (a) Briefing sheet: This sheet provides initial information about these conditions for those who want a brief introduction (eg teachers and higher level teaching assistants). It provides references to some key texts about the condition.
  • (b) Classroom support sheet: This sheet provides ‘must have’ basic information about the condition for staff newly arrived in the classroom and needing to work immediately with a young person who has that condition.
  • (c) Information sheet: For those who would like to follow up the topic in greater depth, this sheet provides more information with further references.

Developmental Language Disorder

RADLD.ORG was created to Raise Awareness of Developmental Language Disorder or ‘DLD’. (Previously RALLI campaign). Here you will find resources that explain what DLD is, the impact it can have, how to get help and how to raise awareness.

Dyslexia/Literacy and Dyscalculia

The Driver Youth Trust is a national charity dedicated to improving the life chances of children and young people, with a focus on those with literacy difficulties and who may have SEND, particularly children with dyslexia. 

The British Dyslexia Association has a dedicated section on their website for educators. They offer webinars and masterclasses on a range of aspects and also hints and tips for education settings from pre- school to further and higher education.

Mental health and behaviour in schools 

About this departmental advice This is non-statutory, departmental advice from the Department for Education (DfE). Mental health problems affect many people, and most schools will have pupils who need mental health support. This advice aims to help schools to support pupils whose mental health problems manifest themselves in behaviour. Schools have an important role to play in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of children by developing whole school approaches tailored to their particular needs, as well as considering the needs of individual pupils.

The Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families is a children’s mental health charity with over 60 years’ experience of caring for young minds. Schools in Mind is a free network for school staff and allied professionals which shares practical, academic and clinical expertise regarding the wellbeing and mental health issues that affect schools.

Pdnet is the national network for all those supporting learners with physical disability.  In April 2017 pdnet was awarded the DfE contract ‘Support for Children and Young People with Physical Disabilities’ which aims improve the knowledge, skills and the capacity of the physical disability workforce across all phases of education.  Over the past 18 months pdnet have worked with the sector to develop phase-specific online training modules and Standards, all of which are now available to access FREE of charge online at pdnet.org.uk.

Pdnet Standards

The pdnet Standards provide a practical structure for schools and settings to self-evaluate current provision, and reflect on the effectiveness of their organisation in meeting the diverse needs of children and young people with physical disability.

‘Raising Awareness of Physical Disability’ Online Training

These training modules are designed for anyone working within an educational setting who needs to develop their awareness and understanding of physical disability and the impact it can have on learning.  Each module is approximately 1 hour in length and uses custom graphics and scenario based learning to help users to understand the barriers or challenges that can be faced by children and young people with physical disability and the steps that can be taken to overcome these.

Effective Practice Hub

The Effective Practice Hub holds a wealth of useful resources to help support children and young people with physical disability. Free to access online, resources available include; information and advice leaflets, case studies, risk assessment examples and ‘top tips’.  All resources have been written by professionals from across the physical disability sector and then quality assured by the pdnet Editorial Board.

Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD)

PMLD Link is a website with information, via a journal, for everyone supporting people with profound and multiple learning disabilities. The website contains advice for commissioners, education, health and social care professionals as well as families.

Speech, language and communication

The Communication Trust is a coalition of over 50 not-for-profit organisations. They support everyone who works with children and young people in England to support their speech, language and communication. The Communication Trust offers a range of options to support your continuing professional development (CPD) in speech, language and communication, many of which are free.

Initial Teacher Training Resources - Less than half the workforce in primary and secondary schools have had any initial training in speech, language and communication (1).
