This film was created by young people as part of a series intended to provide accessible guides to the SEND Reforms. To continue this we are working with young people to develop accessible Preparing for Adulthood information.

What options are there for me as I get older?

This is an important question for many young people but especially for young people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities and their families.  The time when young people grow up and gradually become adults is known in schools and to social services as ‘Preparation for Adulthood’. You may also have heard the word ‘transition’ used.

The information included under the heading "Preparing for Adulthood" will be useful for all young people and their families whatever their needs. For young people who will need support from adult social care and other services when they are an adult, the information will explain how "transition from child to adult services"  happens.

It can be an anxious time. We know that these are some of the areas young people and their families want to know about:

  • education and training after school
  • employment in the future
  • how health needs will be taken care of
  • what adult services will be available
  • whether there will be support to live independently
  • how to be safe

Some parents also want to know how they themselves can get support.

The National Preparing for Adulthood programme (PfA)

The National Preparing for Adulthood programme (PfA) is delivered by a partnership between the National Development Team for inclusion (NDTi) and the Council for Disabled Children (CDC). The programme is funded by the Department for Education as part of the Delivering Better Outcomes Together consortium.

The Preparing for Adulthood programme provides expertise and support to local authorities and their partners to embed preparing for adulthood from the earliest years

The Preparing for Adulthood outcomes are based on what disabled young people say is important to them. Ultimately young people want to have full lives with choices about their future and control of their support.

Our Preparing for Adulthood section is being developed to match these outcomes and using the Developing the Preparation for Adulthood section of the Local Offer document as a reference.
