Description of activity
Community Special Care Dentistry is for patients who live in Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Bexley, Greenwich, Croydon, Richmond, Kingston, Merton, Sutton and Wandsworth. The service is offered at 26 community-based health centres and sites in south east and south west London, including a Mobile Dental Unit.
The service provides a full range of dental treatment and oral healthcare for patients for whom treatment by a general dental practice is unsuitable.
They see people who have one or more of the following:
• physical disability
• complex medical condition
• sensory disability
• learning disability
• autism / autistic spectrum disorder
• children under 16 who are uncooperative
• severe mental health condition.
They also see patients who have a phobia or severe anxiety about dental treatment only if they have other conditions that make them eligible for treatment by the service.
Note: This record will need reviewing in April/May 2017 when a new service contract will start.

Patients must be resident in Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Bexley, Greenwich, Croydon, Richmond, Kingston, Merton, Sutton or Wandsworth. We take referrals from dentists, GPs, other dental hospitals, social services, voluntary sector agencies and other healthcare professionals such as carers.

As the service is referral only they do not give out details of individual clinics until an referral/appointment has been made. Details are sent out with the appointment details and a patient information booklet (which can be downloaded from the website)

Normal NHS dental charges apply to adults unless they are exempt.
Children (up to 18 years of age or 19 if in full time education) are exempt from dental charges.
